Data Communications I - The FundamentalsDescriptionThis is an introductory level class for people with little prior exposure to data communications systems but who need an understanding of the technology's fundamentals as well as industry buzzwords. The class begins by covering the base principles of data including such topics as bits and their origin, binary theory, character code sets, the functions of transmitters and receivers, and a solid discussion of data protocols including how packets and frames are formed. This knowledge is then used to understand particular implementations of data systems including local area networks or LANs, Ethernet, wide area networks or WANs, packet switching, and frame relay and asynchronous transfer mode technologies. A discussion of office wiring and unshielded twisted pair categories of wire is also included.
