LAN Peer-to-Peer Telephony

LAN peer-to-peer IP telephony reflects the power and capacity of computer-based electronics today as IP phones are basically computers with a handset. Some of these phones offer the capability of a complete business phone system in the phone unit itself, in other words, there is no need for a call control server, proxy server or SIP server for calls made between them. One could just buy a box of these phones, connect them to the office LAN, let them discover each other and start making calls.

McGuire Consulting P2P telephonyReview A good example of such a phone comes from SysMaster with their line of Tornado IP phones, ranging from the cost effective M5 to the M20, which adds extensive video capabilities to the voice. The Tornado M5 IP Phone is a low cost product that fully supports IP Centrex/PBX features without the need to interact with a central server (i.e. such features are supported internally). The device offers DID, Caller ID, Speed 2-digit Dialing, Anonymous Call Rejection, Call Forward, Call Return, 3-way Conferencing and many other IP Centrex features. It comes with integrated voicemail system which can accept and record up to 80 calls/messages. Unlike traditional PBX systems which store voicemails in a central server/location, Tornado M5 stores messages locally and can make them available to users even in cases when the service provider’s network is unavailable.
