Telecommunications I - The Basics

Description

This is an introductory level class for people with little prior exposure to telecommunications and who need an understanding of the technology's fundamentals as well as the common industry buzzwords.

The class begins with an overview of the telecommunications industry, the services covered and how they are provided plus the important standards groups involved. Elements of the telephone network are described including telephone calling, types of lines and trunks, switches, tariffs and billing. Next, service types are covered including analog circuits, voice grade lines, DSL and cable plus digital services including digitizing voice, multiplexing, T1 and T3 circuits, CSU/DSU and ISDN.

Telecommunications II - Transmission Media

Description

This class covers the fundamentals of important transmission media for beginners in the carrier and user community as an excellent follow-on to the Telecommunications I class.

The discussion in this class addresses two critical topics - optical fiber and wireless communications. The fiber optic section will address the basics of how fiber optical systems function including light sources, fiber components, fiber types and their applications as well as common fiber-based transmission systems including SONET/SDH operations, Ethernet, PON and metropolitan networks. The wireless section describes radio frequency system definitions, microwave and software defined radio systems, cellular and 3G/4G systems, WiFi and WiMax and other short-distance radio standards.
